The New Year brings new and fresh energy. I love how the New Year empowers people to commit to many things, especially themselves. The energy of the New Year is refreshing, confident, and uplifting with a dash of determination. With the upcoming inauguration and the recent Palisades fires, we need this energy more than ever. We can also add to individual energetic experiences by using this time as a time to come together. As I write this, What the World Needs Now Is Love by Jackie DeShannon is echoing, serving as a beautiful reminder of the power of love.
Researchers now know something that communities of color have known for decades, love heals. Research shows that social support promotes resilience among trauma survivors. Studies have found that having supportive people in your corner during a trauma serves as a buffer for developing PTSD. Research also shows that hugs reduce fear and stress while improving heart health. These research findings have one thing in common: they prove that community improves mental, emotional, and physical health. In other words, love heals.
As a trauma therapist, one of the main goals is to help clients love. Loving yourself or others can be especially difficult for trauma survivors because it is often the people closest to them who are the first to harm them. Even so, as a mind-body-spirit trauma therapist, I believe that it is possible for trauma survivors to love. In fact, it is necessary. Healing from trauma involves addressing the wounds that linger not just in the mind but also in the body and spirit. Trauma can fragment our sense of self, creating disconnection and isolation, creating a path toward illness, low vibrations, and disease. As a mind-body-spirit trauma therapist, it’s necessary to respond with a holistic approach to healing — and one of their most effective tools is the support group.
A Quick Word on Community Connection
You know, back in the day, we created a community with our neighbors, family, classmates, fictive kin, and co-workers. The world was more communal and interactive. We walked more, ate food without photographing the food, healed in the community, i.e., churches or spiritual centers, and actually knew our neighbors.
Today, this is different. It is harder to meet people in person, to find trusting community events, to experience friendliness, to find people with shared interests, and much less to feel safe. It is possible to change how we connect. As a mind-body-spirit trauma therapist, I believe it is possible and necessary. It is necessary for healing, to raise the vibrational frequency of this world, and to return to the cultural foundations of collectivism.
Two Powerful Benefits of Support Groups
-
Shared Healing and Connection
Support groups provide a powerful reminder that no one has to face trauma alone. Being in a space with others who understand your experience creates a sense of belonging and validation. Hearing similar stories can reduce feelings of isolation and offer comfort in knowing that healing is possible. You realize quickly that you are not alone and that there are people who understand.
-
Collective Strength and Empowerment
In a group setting, participants draw strength from one another. Each person’s progress becomes a source of inspiration and hope for others. This collective energy fosters resilience and helps participants see their healing journey reflected in the experiences of those around them. Energy is transferrable and in this setting, we transfer love, hope, and inspiration.
